Feeling cooped up at home these days, what with Chinese New Year, the Coronavirus and the bad weather?

What if this was an opportunity to turn your forced staycation into a home creative retreat?

After all, when the universe gives you lemons, make lemonade!

I’ve been dreaming about taking a solid week off from work to do nothing but create away from everyday duties. Let’s face it, creating for the sake of creating can be hard to fit into your everyday life, especially with Shanghai’s usual hectic rhythm.

We cannot control outer events, and so let this situation be an occasion to work our flexibility muscle. Let’s open our mind and being adaptable without compromising what’s most important.

When you become too rigid, you lose the access to growth and untapped potential. Loosen up, open your mind and heart, and see if making the most of this situation feels better.

Write It Up: Use the time on your hands to do some journaling: reflect on yourself, your past, your dreams; reflect on what’s important for the future. If you haven’t had time to think about what you want 2020 to be for you, you can use this quiet period to make your vision board for the year and draw a « dream » plan. Visualisation activates the creative powers of your subconscious mind. By getting clear on what you truly want, you have a better chance to being aligned with your true desires. By drawing a plan on how to achieve your goals, and putting it all in writing, you are more likely to act upon them. There is only one authentic you, let your ego rest and your true purpose can arise from your soul.

Check out our free guide on how to make 2020 your most creative year yet.

  • Clean It Up: Now is also good timing to do a big spring cleaning at home.

Sweeping away what is no longer needed makes room for new and more aligned things. It also helps clear your mind, and help getting to the core of a situation you might be encountering.

How about this overflowing wardrobe that is driving you crazy? Don’t delay further this wardrobe overhaul you’ve been dreaming about. #konmariallthethings

  • Cosy It Up: Make your home the “land of milk and honey”: spend time making your place feel comfortable and luxurious, in your own way. How about changing your furniture place?

Adding some artworks onto you walls, repainting some parts of the walls or the door frames? Decorate with your favourite floral bouquets, light up some candles, burn up some incense and spend time curled up on your sofa with a warm and soft winter blanket, watching your favourite movies, or catching up on reading.

Or simply give yourself the gift of daydream.

Take time for self care, whether this means a hot bath infused with essential oils, brewing your favourite cup of tea or coffee, home yoga or meditation.

  • Share It: Take advantage of all the time on hand for some home cooking, experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes. Spend quality time with your loved ones, enjoy long conversations, indulge in play time, share these sweet moments of understanding.

  • Create And Make: Ever wanted to try learn an art or craft technique but never found time?

Now is the perfect occasion! Experiment freely, or you can also find plenty of good tutorials on line. Let the artist within you speak up. Play your favourite tunes. Begin with searching for inspiring visuals, start a sketchbook, allow yourself to doodle freely.

If you find the idea of a « blank page » daunting, start little at a time, every day a little more, without great expectations, just for the pleasure of trying something new.

I’ve been given a loom by a sweet friend this summer, and to my dismay I have found excuses after excuses for not making time to use it. So now, I declare this staycation the perfect excuse for actually catching up on my weaving!

Enjoy this time that feels more languid than ambitious, when all your senses are awake to the unlimited possibilities in the universe. These times are precious and don’t come by often.

Let your thoughts and feelings be sweet with gratitude and your heart will be nourished with the abundance of creativity.

Sunshine is a choice and a mindset. Be open to it!

Here you are: you're all set for an exciting staycation!

And remember, you're not alone in this!

Share with your friends and let us know in the comments below what is your top tip to make the most of your staycation!
